Voice coil motors are employed in encoders for precise motion sensing and position feedback. In this application, the voice coil motor acts as a movable element within the encoder assembly. As the motor moves, it generates a varying electrical signal that corresponds to its position.

The process begins with the voice coil motor being attached to a mechanism whose position needs to be monitored. The motor's coil is placed within the magnetic field of the encoder. When an external force, such as a user input or an automated control, causes the motor to move, the coil's position within the magnetic field changes.

As the coil moves, it cuts through the magnetic lines of force, inducing an electrical voltage. This voltage is proportional to the velocity and direction of the coil's movement. This phenomenon is known as electromagnetic induction. The varying voltage generated by the coil is captured by the encoder's electronics.
